Creating and Editing Categories

Categories help to organize products in your store, making it easier for customers to browse and find what they are looking for. Editing and creating categories is done from the Category Screen, which provides several fields to customize how the category appears and functions.

Fields for Creating or Editing Categories #

Name (Mandatory):

  • This is the name of the category, such as Clothing, Electronics, or Home Decor. This is the only required field

Slug:

  • A URL-friendly version of the category name, used for the category’s unique web address. If you don’t manually create a slug, it will be automatically generated based on the category name.
  • For example, if the category name is Men’s Fashion, the slug could be mens-fashion.

Description:

  • Here, you can add a brief description of the category. It can provide customers with more information about what types of products they can find in this category.
  • This field is optional but useful for SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and customer experience.

Parent Category:

  • If this category is a subcategory of another, you can select the parent category from this dropdown.
  • For example, if you are creating a category called Smartphones, you can set Electronics as the parent category.

Display Type:

  • This allows you to control how products in this category are displayed. Options include:
    • Products: Only the products in this category will be shown.
    • Subcategories: Only the subcategories will be shown.
    • Both: Both products and subcategories will be shown.

Thumbnail:

  • You can upload an image that represents this category. This will be displayed on the shop page if your theme supports it.

Important Notes #

  • While only the Name field is mandatory, adding details such as a Description, Slug, and Thumbnail can improve your store’s usability and appearance.
  • Using Parent Categories helps in building a hierarchical structure, allowing for easier navigation. For example, you can have Clothing as the parent category and subcategories like Men’s Clothing or Women’s Clothing.

This functionality allows you to create a clear, easy-to-navigate structure for your store, which will improve both customer experience and SEO.
